Duanwu Festival is a traditional Chinese festival held on the fifth day of the fifth month of the Chinese calendar. It is also known as the Double Fifth.[citation needed] It has since been celebrated, in various ways, in other parts of East Asia as well. In the West, it's commonly known as Dragon Boat Festival.
The exact origins of Duan Wu are unclear, but one traditional view holds that the festival memorializes the Chinese poet Qu Yuan (c. 340 BC-278 BC) of the Warring States Period. He committed suicide by drowning himself in a river because he was disgusted by the corruption of the Chu government. The local people, knowing him to be a good man, decided to throw food into the river to feed the fish so they would not eat Qu's body. They also sat on long, narrow paddle boats called dragon boats, and tried to scare the fish away by the thundering sound of drums aboard the boat and the fierce looking carved dragon head on the boat's prow。
In the early years of the Chinese Republic, Duan Wu was also celebrated as "Poets' Day," due to Qu Yuan's status as China's first poet of personal renown.
Today, people eat bamboo-wrapped steamed glutinous rice dumplings called zongzi (the food originally intended to feed the fish) and race dragon boats in memory of Qu's dramatic death.

端午节的传统习俗就是吃粽子。因此，我们家有一个名副其实的包粽子好手——我妈妈。所以每年过端午节的时候，我们全家都能吃到许多粽子。我妈妈常说：用芦苇的叶子包粽子最香。所以，她用芦苇的叶子来包粽子。她在包粽子之前，先做好准备工作：把芦苇的叶子放在水里煮一煮，把准备好的糯米和枣分别洗一洗，准备工作就做好了。等芦苇的叶子凉了以后，她就开始包粽子了。她先取三片叶子，把两片叶子正着放，一片反着放，夹在中间，把这三片叶子卷成一个圆雉体的模样，然后在里面放上糯米，中间夹几个枣，最后把叶子用线捆好，一个粽子就包好了。她包得又肥又大，活像一个老佛爷在睡觉。等她把粽子包完后，把它们放在高压锅里蒸四十分钟，再放三四个小时，使其入味后，就可以吃了!虽然我妈妈包的粽子的原料极其简单，但是包出来的粽子却是香喷喷的。香得使你只要一闻到味，就会挑起你的食欲;只要你的餐桌前一有粽子，你就会大口大口地吃起来。所以，我每当吃粽子时，总是吃得很多，可能是因为粽子太合我口味了吧!说到合我的口味，我也不知道我妈妈包粽子有什么“秘决”，每次包的粽子总是香喷喷的，吊人的胃口，使人馋诞欲滴，不得不吃得很多。
过端午节除了要吃粽子，当然也少不了赛龙舟哟!
我最喜欢看得就是赛龙舟的情形，几十个水手都手拿着桨，用尽全身的用手奋力地划着，擂鼓的水手势气高昂，用力地敲着有规律的鼓点儿。“加油，加油!”，场边的拉拉队激情洋溢，发出雷鸣般地加油声、呐喊声、助威声，使水手们不得不更加使劲划船。整个赛龙舟的场面多么壮观、激烈，可以说是独一无二，是端午节传统的象征。

端午节到咯!我们家特地买来一盒粽子来欢度端午。我津津有味地品尝着美味的粽子，不禁赞道：“真是好吃，希望每天都是端午节。”话音刚落，我就听见妈妈足以传遍整栋楼的尖叫，我和爸爸急忙赶过去。
只见妈妈指着一个房间的门，惊恐地说：“这怎么回事!”我和爸爸不约而同地往门内一望，同时被吓到了。我的天啊!这房间里面摆得全都是大大小小的盒装粽子!我连忙掐了自己一下，“哎哟，痛死我了……看来不是梦……”
“你去!”爸爸妈妈互相对望一眼，极有默契地双手一推，把我推入“粽海”。
“胆小鬼!”我一边抱怨一边望向粽子包装盒。只见盒子上赫然写着几个大字“雷神牌粽子”，然后下面是一个造型惊人的“神”，后面跟着歌词“偶雷偶雷偶雷偶雷……”我愕然，难道这就是传说中的“雷神”!
为了解决这不速之客——“雷神牌粽子”，我和爸妈访亲拜友，白送粽子。送的人家都不好意思要了。哪知送完了一批粽子还剩一大堆，堆的跟山一样高。
为了正常的作息，夺回被粽子霸占的房间。我被迫当起了小贩。每天放完学就一边写作业，一边卖粽子。可是端午节都过去了，生意惨淡啊!我埋没在一堆粽子里，过往的人们在粽子前面纷纷议论，“这孩子真可怜，哪位好心人，把她的粽子买几盒送到废品收购站吧……”我汗如雨下。
因为学习退步的缘故，老妈结束了我的“小贩生涯”，她一脸沉重的告诉我后果——那就是，每天一日三餐都得多加2个大粽子!
这项决定导致我一听跟粽子谐音或沾边的词胃里就开始翻滚。可那一大堆粽子还是不见少……
下一个端午要来了，我们还在与粽子作艰苦斗争，这就是我们家传说中的“粽子战争”。这粽子好像怎么吃也吃不完。
