　　S: Absolutely, it is a place worthy to visit. You can see majestic and splendid old buildings everywhere. However, I was moved by its tough and tensile spirit, even at the time of great tribulation, rather than its buildings.

　　S:牛津大学绝对是值得一去的地方，到处都是宏伟壮观的古建筑。但是，牛津最吸引我的并不是它的建筑，而是一种在苦难中依然顽强挺立的百折不挠的精神。

　　V: I'm confused. What makes you say that?

　　V:我很困惑。你为什么那么说呢?

　　S: Well, the history of the University was extremely tortuous. There are conflicts between townspeople and university students at the very beginning of its foundation. It almost came to an end for several times. I remembered that teaching had suspended for two times, one was in 1209 and the other in 1355.

　　S：牛津大学的历史是非常曲折的。牛津城的市民和大学的学生们自牛津建校以来就冲突不断，有几次学校差点就倒闭了。我记得学校曾经两次停课，一次是在1209年，还有一次是在1355年。

　　V: Oh, I have heard about the riot happened on the St. Scholastica Day in 1355. It can be considered as the most notorious② event in the history of Oxford.

　　V:噢，我曾经听说过发生在1355年修士节那天的暴乱。它可以说是牛津历史上最不堪回首的事件了。

　　S: Maybe! However, the Oxford Movement broke up in 1833 also had an immense impact on the development of the University. It was a religious movement arguing for the recovery of traditional aspects of the Christian faith.

　　S:也许吧!但是，1833年爆发的牛津运动也对牛津大学的发展产生了巨大的影响。它是一场要求重振英国国教的宗教运动。

　　V; Luckily, the University of Oxford grew up eventually to the world’s leading academic institute. By the way, what’s the concrete date of its foundation? Someone said that it was built up for more than 800 years, while someone stated for some 900 years.

　　V:幸运的是，牛津大学还是不断成长，最后发展成为了世界级的顶尖学府。顺便问一句，牛津大学具体是什么时候建成的?有人说它有800多年的历史，又有人说有900多年。

　　S: Actually，the University doesn't have a clear date of foundation. However, teaching existed there in some forms as far back as 1096. Although both All Souls College and University College have repeated claimed that they own documents, which provide that teaching in Oxford started in the year 825, it was not accepted by the public.

　　S:事实上，这所大学并没有确切的建校日期。但是，早在1096年教学就以某些形式在牛津存在了。虽然众灵学院和大学学院都不断声称他们有证据表明教学活动早在825年前就存在于牛津大学了，但是这并设有被公众所接受。

　　V: Oh，I see. Have you ever visited the oldest museum in the UK? I caught sight of it in a book, and it seems to be called the Ashmolean Museum.

　　S: Yes, I have! Its full name is Ashmolean Museum of Art and Archaeology, which is on Beaumont Street. It is also the world’s first university museum, whose first building was built between 1678 and 1683.

　　V： Great! Did you see the Alfred Jewel, the one stolen in the British television series Inspector Morsel

　　S: Yes, I did. It is about 6 centimeters long, made of filigreed gold, enclosing a highly polished piece of quartz crystal beneath which is set a cloisonne enamel plaque. The Jewel can not be more beautiful!

　　S:嗯，我看到了。它大概6厘米长，是用金银细线装饰的纯金制品，里面镶嵌着一块光洁透亮的水晶，水晶下面是一块景泰蓝的小装饰板。漂亮极了!

　　V: I'm so eager to see it with my own eyes!

　　S: Well, I have taken lots of pictures, would you like to have a_ look at them?

　　V: Of course! I wonder if it is true that the jeweliy had been stolen.

　　V:当然啦!我想知道这个绝世珍宝是不是真地被盜过。

　　S: No. Though thieves came into the museum in 1999, it was not lost. They aimed to steal a painting.

　　S:设有。虽然有小愉在1999年混入了博物馆，但是它并设有丢失。小愉的目标是一liBo

　　V: So lucky. It’s to be regretted to lose such a precious jewelry.

　　V:太幸运了。这么珍贵的东西，丢了就太可惜了。

　　S： Quite right. Let’s make an appointment to my home to look at those photos!

　　S:是啊。那我们约个时间到我家去看照片吧!

　　V： Well, what about tomorrow afternoon? We don’t have class then.

　　V:呃，那明天下午怎么样?明天下午我设课。

　　S: Ok! I’m looking forward to your coming on time! See you then!

　　S:好啊!期待你如约到来!到时见!

　　V: See you!

　　V:再见!
