A number of有“许多”(many)的意思吗?估计凡是中国学生都会这样认为，不信你去查一下百度翻译，其结果就是“一些;许多的”。但是如果你在www.thefreedictionary.com中搜“a number of”,它的解释是这样"a collection of persons or things; several",并无"many"之意。
Several是“若干”的意思，并非“许多”。www.thefreedictionary.com 给出"several"的形容词释义之一"being of a number more than two or three but not many”,即多于两三个，但不是"many"(其它释义与数数无关)。它给出的代词释义为“An indefinite but small number; some or a few”也没有many之意。
因为汉语没有冠词，所以中国师生对英语中冠词特别纠结。正因如此，a number of 往往被老师与"the number of"拉郎配在一起学习。the number of students 表示“学生人数”，但是顺着这个定势来理解"a number of students"就很难接受它的意思为“若干学生”(在中国英语教学实践中，它更被长期错误地翻译为“许多学生”)，于是就认为这是习惯用法而对其死记硬背。其实a number of与the number of的组成结构根本就不应放在一起。
大家感觉一下 a glass of water, a box of books,…有没有别扭呢?没有!a number of students 和a box of books的组成结构完全相同。在这种结构中，of前面的那个词相当于汉语的量词。这里的number 的意思是an indefinite quantity of units or individuals(数量不确定的单位或个体)。
因为a number of students的主词是students, 所以后面的谓语动词自然是复数，而the number of students的主词是number,自然谓语动词要用单数。
与a number of 结构类似的还有 a lot of, a great deal of等词。

(3) 用作表语,

(4) 用作状语。—是用于修饰比较级，二是用饰动词：
①修饰比较级，相当于much,意为“……得多”,
例：Houses are a lot more expensive these days.
如今的房价贵多了。
②修饰动词，一是表示程度.意为“很，很多.非常等;二是表示頻率，意为“经常”。
例:He has helped me a lot.
他给予了我很大的帮助。
I play tennis quite a lot in the summer.
夏天我经常打网球。

(1) alot of与lots of的意思和用法完全相同，都是起形容词作用的词组，可用于修饰可数或不可数名词。相当于many或much。
例:There are a lot of/lots of famous movie stars in theUSA.
美国有许多著名的电影明星。
We need a lot of/lots of money.
我们需要很多钱。
(2) 修饰主语时，谓语的数取决于它所修饰名词的数。
例:A lot of money was spent on it.
在它上面花了很多钱。
A lot of people were interested in it.
对此感兴趣的人很多。
► a number of/large numbers of 只可以修饰可数名词复数形式(它修饰的词作主语时谓语用复数形式)，可以换为some, many，alot of，plentyof。例：Ihave a number of letters to write today.
今天我也好多信要写。
►a large amount of修饰不可数名词。
例：I spend a large amout of my time on this work.
我在这项工作上花费了不少时间。
►a great deaI of 只可以修饰不可数名词(它修饰词作主语时谓语用单数形式)，可以换为much.
例：I spend a great deal of time/money on shopping.
在购物方面我花费了大量时间/ 金钱。
►plenty of表尔“足够，大量”既可以修饰不可数名词也可以修饰可数名词的复数形式，用法同 alot of/lots of。
例：There are plenty of eggs in the market. 市场上有很多鸡蛋。

a number of 和the number of 用法与区别
英语中有两个相似的短语：a number of与the number of，二者的区别涉及到主谓一致的问题，它们修饰名词作主语时，谓语的数是不一样的。
①number of +名词复数
=a lot of =los of+名词复数
②a number of…表示“一些，若干”(= some)，后接可数名词复数或代词，谓语动词用复数形式。 还可以加入形容词表示数量大或小等(例如：a large/small number of…许多/少数……)。
A number of students of our school have go to school by bike.
我们学校有很多学生上学骑自行车。
③the number of…意思是“……的数字/数目”，介词of同其后名词构成介词短语，修饰the number.当它作主语时，谓语动词用单数。
